Rising C Farms believes in nature taking its course so that fruit is ripened on its own time. Factors such as weather conditions can have an adverse effect, but Rising C believes that the primary goal should be fruit that is better tasting, and therefore worth the risk. That's why they're our main focus for the month; they share our sentiments that taste should always come first.

Here are the oranges you can choose from:

Heirloom-just as the name implies, these navel oranges come from old line Washington Navel trees (first discovered in Brazil in 1820!) combined with sour and sweet orange rootstock. Most commercial growers shy away from producing this variety of orange due to inherited problems, but heirlooms are often considered the best tasting.

Seville-also known as "bitter orange," the Moors first brought this tree to Spain. The color is a rich gold, both in the rind and the flesh. Its unique acidity works beautifully in marmalade, orange flower water, perfumes, and aromatic oils.

Cara Cara-also known as the "red navel orange," it originated in Valencia, Venezuela. The cara cara has a yellowish-orange rind and red pulp. The pulp is tender with overtones of raspberries and strawberries. The taste overall is sweet and spicy.

Blood-these oranges are named for their deep crimson flesh. There are several different types of blood orange, but we will be bringing in the "connoisseur's citrus," the moro blood orange. Originally from Sicily, the moro ranges from sweet to tart and has lush berry overtones in taste. The color is usually a deep red to burgundy.
