What was once called the "forbidden fruit" of Barbados is now practically ubiquitous in our country, as grapefruit's vibrant aroma and flavor make it a favorite for breakfast, flavoring other foods, and aromatherapy. And, because grapefruits are grown throughout the world, they are a select favorite any time of the year, even in the winter. In fact, grapefruits are at their best right now, from winter through early spring.

Because we are into the deepest part of winter and all run the risk of colds and flu, it's good to know that we have something that's as nutritious and tasty as grapefruit. Grapefruit is a good source of vitamin C, which helps to support the immune system. In addition, the pink and red varieties of grapefruit contain lycopene, which can have anti-tumor properties. Now you know why you always feel so good after eating one!

How to select a grapefruit:
  • Choose a grapefruit that has thin, fine-textured, brightly colored skin. They should be firm yet springy when held in the palm and pressed.

  • Pick one up and feel its weight in your hand. The heavier they are for their size, the juicier they'll be.

Storage:

Do not store grapefruit at room temperature for more than a day or two. They are best kept when wrapped in plastic and kept in the refrigerator (up to 2 weeks).
