A Fruit of Many Faces

The pomegranate is famed for a number of reasons. It is a recurring symbol in classic mythology (even having the honor of being the fruit representing the Queen of the Gods) and in the Bible; it is a prominent theme in the arts and literature. It is praised by physicians for its high levels of antioxidants, which can help lower LDL cholesterol, the "bad" cholesterol that can contribute to heart disease.

Above all else, however, the pomegranate's distinctive flavor and deep crimson arils have made them a global favorite. And, since this "superfruit" is now in season in the Northern Hemisphere, it makes sense to feature it this month. Balducci's is proud to feature Pom Wonderful pomegranates for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Pom Wonderful grows only pomegranates in the sunny San Joaquin valley in Central California. All of their pomegranates are hand-picked and shipped ripe from their orchards to our stores, so you are getting the freshest, best tasting fruit possible. In addition to pomegranates, Pom Wonderful also makes pomegranate juice, tea, and dietary supplements.

Anyone who's eaten the arils of a pomegranate will tell you: those little rubies are addictive! That first crisp bite brings a sweet, tart (bordering on bitter) flavor, with a burst of juice that's almost surprising - you didn't think something that tiny could be so juicy! The arils are the perfect size for snacking as well, and are so plentiful that you could fill a bowl and set it out for company just with one fruit.

And while the arils make a deliciously satisfying snack, the fruit as a whole makes a charming decoration as a centerpiece for the dinner table. Paired with autumn leaves, corn, or greens, the pomegranate is especially stunning during the Thanksgiving holiday. You might even consider placing whole or cut pomegranates on the platter with your main course!

The next time you're in our Produce department, look for Pom Wonderful pomegranates. They're simply...wonderful.
