In 1916, Louis "Pop" Balducci, a young immigrant from the Italian coastal town of Bari, opened a corner vegetable stand in Brooklyn. By 1946, business had outgrown the stand, and Pop and his son Andy opened the original Balducci's store in Greenwich Village (they later moved to a much larger location within the neighborhood).
Many of their offerings were created by Mamma Balducci (Andy's mother), based on old family recipes she learned by heart as a young girl in Italy. Although Balducci's is now hailed as a New York institution and world-famous epicurean landmark, our cuisine is still firmly rooted in the old neighborhood. Now it's time to meet and greet the modern face of Balducci's.
Imagine a market where taste comes first, above all else. A place where the produce is hand-selected, where meats are prime cuts, and the fish is flown in fresh from the wharves. Not only that, a customer can get restaurant-quality prepared foods, the finest imported cheeses and other delicacies, and a variety of meats roasted and smoked in the Old World tradition. But it's no figment of the imagination; this market is Balducci's.
What started as a produce stand run by "Pop" Balducci has now become a gourmet powerhouse, with 10 stores located in Maryland, DC, Virginia, New York, and Connecticut. We have retained that passion for food that was the original inspiration for the market, and have used it to scour the world to bring customers the very best in new flavors. We also have a team of chefs on-staff to create meals worthy of the finest dining establishments in New York.
If all that wasn't enough, we have our own private label goods as well. When a customer picks up anything bearing the Balducci's name, they can be assured they have found gourmet quality at a reasonable price. From decadent chocolate bars to zesty soups, the Balducci's private label is more than just a store brand; it's the very best in taste.
Balducci's strives to be more than just a supermarket; it's a second home for the food lover, the adventuresome pleasure-seeker who knows that eating is more than just a part of living life - it's part of enjoying life.
High Noon, our upscale breakfast-and-lunch shops, are located in the heart of Washington, DC's working district, where fresh meals are ready in minutes.
